Massimo received a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Bologna in 2006 and a Technology Entrepreneurship Certificate from the Leavey School of Business, Santa Clara University, CA in 2010. He has 10 years of research experience on microelectronics and microsystems for life science applications with 30 publications appeared on international scientific journals, such as the Technology Review Magazine from MIT. He is inventor of 4 patent families in the fields of microtechnologies for cell manipulation and innovative methods for drug discovery. In 2009, after developing a business idea based on the technology currently under development at Cellply, he obtained a grant (1st rank) from the Fulbright Commission for a period of study and work in Silicon Valley. In 2011 he co-founded the Italian Institute for Entrepreneurship, a no-profit organization promoting initiatives for the growth of an entrepreneurship-based ecosystem in Italy.
Roberto is Full Professor in Electrical Engineering at the University of Bologna and serial entrepreneur. He received the Electrical Engineering degree and the Ph.D. from the University of Bologna. From 1986, he has been visiting the Dept. of EECS at the University of California at Berkeley and the Dept. of Electrical Engineering at the MIT in Boston. In 1998 he became Director of the Laboratory for Electronic Systems, a joint venture of the University of Bologna and STM Microelectronics. He is senior founder of Silicon Biosystems, a biomedical device company (Exit with Menarini Spa), and tech inventor of the fingerprint sensor developed at Upek, Inc and integrated on the Iphone (Exit with Apple). Roberto published 90+ papers in various fields including numerical simulation, electronics, computer science, biometric sensors and applications of microelectronic to biotechnology. He has been awarded a Best Paper Award of the IEEE Transactions on Semiconductor Manufacturing and an “ISSCC Best Paper Award” for his work on biosensor system design.
Antonio has over 40 years’ industrial experience in international medical device companies. He has been a Chairman at Bellco s.r.l., a leading company in hemodialysis systems, and a CEO at Olympus Medical Systems Europe. He is an investor and a Chairman of Italian Angels for Growth (IAG) – the largest business angels group in Italy. He currently serves as a director on the board of several international companies. He holds a M.Sc. degree in Electronic Engineering.
Elizabeth is an Investment Director of Venture Capital at Quadrivio Capital in Milano, Italy. She is co-founder of NicOx S.A., a public pharmaceutical company, and President of NicOx Research Institute Srl. From 2005-2008 she served as a Venture Consultant to Sofinnova Partners, the largest venture capital group specialized in health care in Europe, because of her broad experience in the development and licensing of innovative pharmaceutical products. Elizabeth hel various positions such as Chairman of the Board of LayLine Genomics, Director of Product Development at Recordati Italy, Consultant of Technology Development at Techint Engineering Company, Vice President of New Technology Ventures Europe at Genzyme.
